Entities, actions and values...
Estudia: That was a lot to think about last time, Phi. Maybe we could keep this session a little briefer so I don’t have so much to digest. Maybe?
Philo: Hey, that’s up to you. I’m only here to try and answer your questions.
Estudia: Okay. You were saying that we can not ask for the cause or reason that someone decides to focus or not. If they do stay in focus, such and such can happen and they will have a better chance of adhering to or learning about reality. My question, which I think I tried to ask before, is about this primary choice. Doesn’t the fact that we can’t ask about the primary choice make it obvious that there must be some sort of conflict between freedom of choice and causality? How can causality not be saying we will act in a certain way because of our nature and hence we aren’t really free but determined?
Philo: Well, you are right to observe that causality does require a relationship between entities and their actions. In fact there is a necessary connection, but not with any particular kind of entity or with any particular type of action. Causality as a law does not say anything about a primary choice, it only say that if such a choice exists, then that choice is made and necessitated by you because you have a specific nature.
Estudia: So, you’re saying that my choice really is a choice and it could have been the opposite. Like I could choose to focus or not. I choose to act or not. But the act of choosing one way or the other is necessary.
Philo: Necessary and unavoidable because you are a human with a certain kind of consciousness. Because of the identity of your consciousness and hence your brain, you must act in a certain way. You must continuously choose whether you are going to focus or not.
Estudia: So that is the primary level. I choose to focus, that is, activate my consciousness, or I choose not to focus. After making that primary choice I can make other choices. Hummm... so do I have free will?
Philo: Well, if you do, your actions are free and as I explained, on the primary level caused.
Estudia: I’m not sure I understand. Well, maybe a little. Go back to actions for a minute. What choice to I have to make in order to act?
Philo: You have to act in accordance with your values. Every action on every issue is done in agreement with your values or in conflict with your values.
Estudia: What does that mean?
Philo: Well, it means you have a complex responsibility. You have to know what you are doing and why. You have to have discipline to pursue a goal. Self-discipline is one of the hardest things to master, but if you have a purpose and select a goal; then pursue that goal over time and against all obstacles including those pesky daily distractions that are part of everyone’s life, you will be acting in accordance with your values. You have to decide what is important for your purpose. You’ll have to have the discipline to pursue your most important values and spend little or no time and effort on those things you may desire but which are of a lesser importance.
Estudia: I’ve got to prioritize my activities then to accomplish anything I suppose?
Philo: You have to choose your methods and means conscientiously, integrate your activities so they move you toward your goals. If you don’t do these things, you won’t be acting in accordance with your values. And, realize that none of your actions or thoughts are going to be automatic. You can say you hold certain values, yet fail to act in accordance with them in your actions. You would be betraying your own values.
Estudia: Oh, I know what you are talking about now. It is too easy to just not do the things I know I need to do, or have to do, or sometimes even want to do. It is too easy to just be out of focus, forget my goals and lose my self-discipline. I see this in all manner of people too. The obese person, wanting health yet ignoring the calorie count or quality of the foods they are eating. The student wanting a degree and the career it will open for them but failing to study or even cheating to get by. The men or women who say they want love and commitment yet lying and cheating and hurting those they promised to respect and honor.
Philo: And if you give up the process of staying in focus and/or acting in accordance with you values, you will turn yourself over to your subconscious mind and think and act on whims and random urges, fears or peer pressure. You will feel your life is determined and you have no control. The only thing you need remember is that those in such a state chose their fate.
Estudia: Eechee! I see your point. From now on I’m choosing to focus and I’ll try to establish and act on values.
Philo: It’s tough at times, but life is immensely complex and you must learn to use your mind to stay alive and better enjoy your existence. That is your real purpose.
Estudia: Thanks, I’ll talk to you again soon. Bye
Philo: Bye.
